Land Clearing, Forestry Mulching & Driveways in Shell Knob, MO

Shell Knob is a Table Rock Lake community on Missouri Route 39, mostly in Barry County with a piece in Stone County. The 2020 Census counted 1,254 residents in the census area, which covers about 10.9 square miles, nearly a quarter of it water. The town dates to 1835, when Henry and Elizabeth Schell opened a trading post on the White River, and the "c" was dropped when the post office opened in 1872. From our Berryville base it's about 21 miles: north on Highway 21, then Highway 221 to the state line and Missouri 39 into town, about 40 minutes. That makes land clearing in Shell Knob, MO, one of our easiest Missouri trips.

What's different about working in Shell Knob

The lake came later. Shell Knob started as a White River trading post, and Table Rock Lake filled in around it after the dam was completed in 1959. Today nearly a quarter of the census area is water, and many lots are wooded slopes above a cove, with a strip of Corps of Engineers land between the property line and the water.

The shore strip belongs to the government. Clearing, mowing, trimming a path, or dropping a tree on Corps shoreline around Shell Knob needs written permission from the Corps before anyone touches it, and trucks, fires, and herbicides are off-limits there. Machine work on your lot stops at the property line.

Cherty ground on steep slopes. Around the lake in Barry and Stone counties, Hailey and Clarksville soils are among the most common in the USDA surveys. Both are loaded with chert and sit on slopes that shed water fast, so drives need crown, ditches, and culverts to last.

Two counties, two offices. The Barry County side issues zoning and soil erosion permits through its Planning Office in Cassville. The Stone County side issues building permits through Planning & Zoning in Galena. Anywhere in Missouri, disturbing an acre or more for construction needs a state land disturbance permit.

Shell Knob FAQ

Can you clear brush down to the lake?

Not on Corps of Engineers land. We work up to your property line. Anything below it needs Corps approval, and vehicles aren't allowed there.

I only come down on weekends. Can you still quote the job?

Yes. Photos and your address help us get started, and we'll set a site visit that fits your schedule.

Which county is my lot in?

Most of Shell Knob is in Barry County, and part is in Stone County. Your tax bill or deed will say, and it tells you which permit office to call.

Can you fix a lake-lot drive that washes out?

Usually. Most washouts come from water running down the gravel. Crown, ditches, culverts, and a compacted base fix the cause.
